Welcome to Mrs. Smith's Weebly page!
Welcome!
All parents and guardians of band students will receive the JMS Instrumental Handbook the first or second week of school, as well as the Discipline Plan page. If you have not received this information from your child by Friday, September 16th, please let me know and I will send another set home, and/or you can access them here, as well. Both of these have a place for a parent signature, and are meant to be returned. (The handbook below is from last year, but the only major change is that practice time is a part of the academic grade this year).
Practice time is to be turned in every week on Monday with a parent or guardian's signature. The first practice time for 7th and 8th graders will be due on Wednesday, September 21st, but will be due every Monday after that. The date for the first practice time required from 6th graders is yet to be determined (we have many students without instruments yet). This is another form of communication between teacher and parent. If you do not see this coming to you for your signature, your student is not getting credit. Practice time is a part of the academic grade for the marking period.
Performances are required, and make up a large portion of the overall grade. Please make every effort to have your student at every performance, and appropriately dressed. Information regarding the next concert will be distributed to the students two weeks in advance, and will also be posted here.
You may use the parent portal to view your child's grades at any time.
You can find the district's grade 6-8 music standards and benchmarks here : http://www.lakeview.misd.net/curriculum/6-8/6-8MusicCurriculum.pdf
You can find all of our concert dates on the district activities calendar on the Lakeview district website. http://www.lakeview.misd.net/index.aspx
As always, please feel free to contact me at any time. I respond to email quicker, but you can always leave a voice mail for me as well.

Supplies
Students (and parents) are responsible for reeds, oil, and other supplies. We have been having major issues with students who cannot play for days, or even weeks because they do not have any reeds. It is recommended that students carry three extras in their case at all times. Please do not forget that we have a representative from Marshall Music that comes to us every Monday. He can deliver things that you need if you call the store in advance. Their number is 248-457-0300.
A Note About Jazz Band
I was just informed today that several students will not be able to play with our jazz band tomorrow night. This really puts a crimp in our performance readiness, and lets the other students down. We have had issues with attendance at concerts recently, and I can't stress enough how important it is for every student to be there. In any case, we will not be having after-school jazz band after this Spring Concert, because of the lack of attendance and commitment. However, those students who do attend the Spring Concert and play in the jazz band performance will still meet in April and May during announcement time of T2R to rehearse for the field trip to the Senior Center in May.
